You’re not behind…

Dear Friends,

At the start of a new year, I always feel a mix of hope and humility. Hope, because fresh beginnings invite vision and intention. Humility, because experience has taught me that the goals I set in January will almost certainly need adjusting by March.

This year, as I looked at our homeschool goals, I found myself thinking less about what I wanted to add and more about what I wanted to sustain. A few years ago, I planned what I thought was a beautiful, well-balanced routine- early mornings, full lesson plans, read-alouds before lunch, nature walks in the afternoon. It worked…for about three weeks. Then a child hit a hard block of math, another struggled emotionally, and I found myself exhausted and discouraged, wondering why I couldn’t “make it work.”

That season taught me an important lesson, and it connects to one of the questions we didn’t get to at last year's conference: How do you establish flexible routines that can grow with the family?

For me, it starts with setting goals before schedules. At the beginning of the year, I ask: What matters most right now? Character? Connection? Consistency in reading and math? Once those priorities are clear, routines can flex without losing purpose.

Next, I build routines around rhythms rather than rigid times. Instead of saying school must start at 9:00, we focus on a predictable order to the day- morning time, focused work, lunch, rest, and afternoon activities. This gives our days structure while allowing space for interruptions, slow mornings, or unexpected needs.

I also revisit routines often. New years, new babies, new sports schedules, or even new attitudes mean it’s time to reassess. A routine that served us well last year may need to stretch- or shrink-this year.

Most importantly, I’m learning to extend myself grace. Flexible routines aren’t a sign of lowered standards; they’re a sign of wisdom. They allow our homeschool to grow alongside our children instead of forcing them to fit a system that no longer serves them.

As you step into this new year, may your goals be gentle, your routines be supportive, and your days be filled with both purpose and peace. You’re not behind- you’re building something that lasts.

With encouragement,

Tiffany Alblinger
